Prominent Ear Surgery
Prominent Ear Aesthetics – Otoplasty
There is no age limit for undergoing prominent ear surgery, which enhances the harmony between the face and ears and gives the ears a more natural appearance. This procedure can be performed on one or both ears. When performed by qualified plastic surgeons, prominent ear aesthetics can significantly improve a person’s appearance and help them feel more confident in social situations. The operation can be carried out under local or general anesthesia.
During the planning phase, the surgeon evaluates the patient’s general health and age, and determines the type of anesthesia in consultation with the patient and their family.
What Is Prominent Ear Aesthetics (Otoplasty)?
Prominent ear aesthetics, also known as otoplasty, is a cosmetic surgical procedure performed to correct structural deformities in one or both ears and to resolve asymmetry between the ears. It is one of the most commonly performed facial aesthetic procedures.
Although otoplasty can be performed at any age, experts recommend the procedure during childhood. When performed before school age, it can help children avoid potentially hurtful comments or social discomfort, boosting their self-confidence. Once the ear cartilage has completed its development, surgery can be considered for children with prominent ear issues. Adults who were not able to have the surgery earlier in life can also safely undergo the procedure.
How Is Prominent Ear Surgery Performed?
Otoplasty is performed under general or local anesthesia. An incision is made behind the ear, where it is not visible, and the surgeon accesses the cartilage that causes the deformity in the natural fold of the ear. Excess cartilage may be removed or reshaped by folding, and permanent sutures are used to maintain the new shape.
Depending on the extent of the changes, otoplasty typically takes about one hour. After the procedure, a bandage is applied to the ears. The bandage remains in place for approximately five days to help stabilize the shape and position of the ears.
It is normal for swelling to occur in the ears after surgery; the edema usually subsides within a week. In general, otoplasty is considered a safe procedure with a relatively short recovery period.
