Male Breast Reduction (Gynecomastia)
Male Breast Reduction
Excess breast tissue and fat accumulation in the chest area during puberty in males that becomes permanent is called gynecomastia (female-like breasts in men). This condition can occur in otherwise completely healthy individuals in terms of sexual and hormonal function, but it may also be a result of certain health problems. It can be caused by excessive weight gain and loss, medication use, thyroid dysfunction, kidney failure, testicular developmental disorders, elevated estrogen levels, and liver disorders.
Male breast reduction surgery is considered one of the aesthetic procedures that yields successful results, is performed safely, and has minimal postoperative complications when carried out by experienced surgeons.
What Is Gynecomastia Surgery?
Cosmetic surgical procedures aimed at removing excess fat, glandular tissue, and skin from the male chest, and correcting any asymmetry between the breasts, are referred to as gynecomastia surgery.
Men who are unable to reduce their chest size through medical treatments, have no general health risks for surgery, are committed to improving their physical appearance, whose breast growth has stabilized, and who feel uncomfortable with the appearance of their chest are ideal candidates for breast reduction surgery. Although it is generally preferred to wait until the individual has passed puberty, gynecomastia surgery may also be performed during adolescence with the approval of surgeons to prevent potential psychological trauma.
How Is Male Breast Reduction Surgery Performed?
If the primary cause of male breast enlargement is excess fat accumulation in the chest area, liposuction is usually performed. Through a few small incisions made in the chest, the fat is loosened using thin cannulas and then removed via suction. Various liposuction techniques may be used during this stage; the most suitable method will be determined by the surgeon. This procedure is performed using a closed technique and does not leave permanent scars on the skin.
If the individual has not only fat accumulation but also excess glandular tissue and loose skin, an excision technique may be applied. This method may also be preferred to create a more natural appearance around the nipple area. In some patients, both techniques may be used simultaneously. The decision depends on the results of the patient’s medical evaluations and the surgeon’s assessment of expectations.
During breast reduction surgery, either general or local anesthesia may be administered. The type of anesthesia is determined on a case-by-case basis. Male breast reduction surgery takes approximately 60 minutes, and patients may be required to wear a compression garment for a period of time following the operation.
